Curatorial Talk with Curator in Residence Francesca Lazzarini

Join us onsite at Griffin Art Projects for a curatorial talk with our curator in residence, Trieste-based researcher and co-curator of Unfolding Desire Francesca Lazzarini.

Griffin Arts Project is delighted to host a talk by Francesca Lazzarini, independent visual arts researcher and co-curator of the project Unfolding Desire, originally presented in Trieste in 2025. The talk is part of the ongoing conversation around the project, which will continue through an Unfolding Desire Assembly at the Vancouver Art Gallery on September 26, 2026.

Drawing on Unfolding Desire –that Francesca Lazzarini has co-curated with Elham Puriya Mehr, organised in partnership with the social cooperative La Collina, the art space Trieste Contemporanea and Griffin Arts Project– the talk reflects on the potential of “being with images otherwise”, a notion that Lazzarini is articulating in her PhD at Goldsmiths, University of London, to foreground how images can foster radical forms of relation, attention, and collective sense-making within the open field of the post-photographic. Rather than understanding images primarily as representations, the curator considers them as sites of encounter that exceed visual meaning alone.

The concepts of desire and unfolding, which lie at the heart of the project, provide the starting point for a broader discussion of withness, affect, and atmospheric attunement as key dimensions of Lazzarini's curatorial research. These concepts are explored not as abstract theoretical categories, but through specific artworks and artistic practices encountered in the context of Lazzarini's curatorial work, and through the relationships developed with the artists with whom she has collaborated.

Finally, the talk unpacks the notion of the post-photographic against the backdrop of the transformations brought about by photography’s computational turn. Rather than defining a new genre, it approaches the post-photographic as an open and mutable space through which to explore the emancipatory possibilities of living, thinking, and relating with images or through images otherwise.
