As part of the Unfolding Desire Residency and Assembly program, Griffin Art Projects welcomes Trieste-based curator Francesca Lazzarini, our curator-in-residence this September!
Drawing on Unfolding Desire, co-curated in Trieste with independent Vancouver-based curator, Elham Puriya Mehr and organised in partnership with the social cooperative La Collina, Art space Trieste Contemporanea and Griffin Art Projects, the talk reflects on the potential of “being with images otherwise. As part of her PhD research at Goldsmiths, Lazzarini foregrounds how images can foster radical forms of relation, attention, and collective sense-making within the open field of the post-photographic. In her research, Lazzarini considers images as sites of encounter that exceed visual meaning, moving beyond representation. Lazzarini will address the “post-photographic” vis a vis the impacts of photography’s computational turn. Rather than defining a new genre, her research approaches the post-photographic as an open and mutable space through which to explore the emancipatory possibilities of living, thinking, and relating with images or through images otherwise.
Lazzarini notes, “The concepts of desire and unfolding which lie at the heart of the project provide the starting point for a broader discussion of withness, affect, and atmospheric attunement as key dimensions. These concepts are explored not as abstract theoretical categories, but through specific artworks and artistic practices I have encountered in my relationships with artists.”
